emmi®-pet Teeth Cleaning - How does it work and what are the benefits?

We first learnt about the emmi®-pet, or Groomers doing teeth cleaning at Crufts a few years ago! After lots of research online, we purchased a kit to use on our own dogs.

They were all fine with a manual toothbrush and doggy toothpaste, but we found that there was lots of tartar build-up still. Once we switched to regular emmi®-pet sessions, the results were like nothing we've seen before!

The emmi®-pet Toothbrush:

The emmi®-pet is designed and manufactured in Germany and is a noiseless, vibrationless brush, that uses patented chip technology in the brush heads to create up to 96,000,000 air oscillations per second. These oscillations traveling down the bristles create bubbles in the toothpaste and water which implode on the teeth and up to 12 mm deep into the gums, to remove bacteria and plaque, and help break down tartar. The nano bubbles are 100x smaller than plaque bacteria, so they can get into all the creases and crevices in your dog's mouth.

Over time, with regular sessions, your dogs teeth and gums get healthier, bad breath will reduce, and your dogs overall health can improve too! Did you know, that bacteria build-up in dog's mouths can cause Kidney failure in older dogs?

It's recommended that you clean your dogs teeth daily, just like your own! However 99% of pet owners don't do this, so we recommend regular maintenance cleans as close together as possible to get the most out of this service. Remember, it's not a 'quick fix', it's a continuous journey to overall better oral health.

Your Dogs Teeth

Depending on which stage your dogs teeth are at, will determine whether we as Groomers can clean your dogs teeth, or if you will need to go to a vet for treatment.

We break these stages down into 4 stages:

We can clean your dogs teeth if they have soft plaque build-up, or some hardened tartar (Stages 1 & 2). If however, your dog has a wobbly tooth, receding gum lines exposing the nerves/roots, abscesses or very sore/swollen gums, it can be painful to have them cleaned, so we will always recommend that you seek veterinary help (Stages 3 & 4).

Once the vets have cleaned them, done any extractions etc. then you can visit your groomer for regular maintenance sessions to hopefully help prevent the need for another vet clean under anaesthetic. If your vet cannot clean your dogs teeth due to age, underlying conditions, or recommend that a Groomer can do the cleaning, we'll ask for a detailed report from your vet confirming that we can proceed with emmi®-pet Teeth Cleaning before we commence.

The Initial Session

The consultation stage is there to assess your dog's suitability for teeth cleaning, and an opportunity for you to ask any questions about general maintenance/oral health. In this session we will:

  1. Assess your dog's teeth and gum health. As above, we will refer you to a veterinary professional if your dogs teeth are a stage 3 or 4. You will not be required to pay for the remainder of the session if we cannot commence. If we find your dog's teeth are a stage 1 or 2, we can commence with the rest of the session.

  2. De-sensitisation. We will work out if your dog will allow us to handle around their face/mouth. If they'll allow a normal toothbrush near their face, teeth and jawls. If so, great! We'll then move onto the emmi®-pet Toothbrush (if your dog tries to bite us or the normal toothbrush, or us during this assessment we won't be able to put the emmi®-pet toothbrush in their mouth, it's a very expensive piece of kit so some de-sensitisation at home would be needed before we could take them on for cleaning ourselves). Your dog will be given it's very own toothbrush head, that will be cleaned and sterilised after each session with us.

  3. Once we're happy that your dog is happy, we'll then conduct a "mini" teeth cleaning session. First, we start with the toothbrush with water only, so they can get used to the feel of it being in their mouth. We'll then move onto adding the emmi®-pet Toothpaste to the brush head and briefly clean their teeth.

  4. Once the toothbrush is in and doing it's job, we'll move it from tooth to tooth, holding it on just below the gum line at the top of the tooth. The longer they allow us to keep the toothbrush on there the better, but most dogs take a few sessions to get used to it. We keep giving them lots of breaks, and begin to build up endurance.

  5. Once the consultation is over, we'll book your dog in for regular ongoing maintenance sessions.

Ongoing maintenance sessions are recommended as close together as possible to achieve the best results. Remember, every time your dog eats and sleeps, bacteria is building up in the mouth, so we recommend a gap of no more than 1 week between initial sessions. This is so we can really start to reduce the bacteria, plaque and tartar in there without it building back up to the level at the previous session in between cleans. Once this is down to a more manageable level, we can then move onto a regular maintenance plan, usually every 2-3 or 3-4 weeks depending on your dogs individual needs going forward.
